Surah Al-Qiyāmah - سورة القيامة
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
TransliterationLa oqsimu biyawmi alqiyamat
Sahih InternationalI swear by the Day of Resurrection
PickthallNay, I swear by the Day of Resurrection;
Yusuf AliI do call to witness the Resurrection Day;
TransliterationWala oqsimu binnafsi allawwamat
Sahih InternationalAnd I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection].
PickthallNay, I swear by the accusing soul (that this Scripture is true).
Yusuf AliAnd I do call to witness the self-reproaching spirit: (Eschew Evil).
TransliterationAyahsabu al-insanu allannajmaAAa AAithamah
Sahih InternationalDoes man think that We will not assemble his bones?
PickthallThinketh man that We shall not assemble his bones?
Yusuf AliDoes man think that We cannot assemble his bones?
TransliterationBala qadireena AAala annusawwiya bananah
Sahih InternationalYes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips.
PickthallYea, verily. We are Able to restore his very fingers!
Yusuf AliNay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.
TransliterationBal yureedu al-insanu liyafjura amamah
Sahih InternationalBut man desires to continue in sin.
PickthallBut man would fain deny what is before him.
Yusuf AliBut man wishes to do wrong (even) in the time in front of him.
TransliterationYas-alu ayyana yawmu alqiyama
Sahih InternationalHe asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?"
PickthallHe asketh: When will be this Day of Resurrection?
Yusuf AliHe questions: "When is the Day of Resurrection?"
TransliterationFa-itha bariqa albasar
Sahih InternationalSo when vision is dazzled
PickthallBut when sight is confounded
Yusuf AliAt length, when the sight is dazed,
Sahih InternationalAnd the moon darkens
PickthallAnd the moon is eclipsed
Yusuf AliAnd the moon is buried in darkness.
TransliterationWajumiAAa ashshamsu walqamar
Sahih InternationalAnd the sun and the moon are joined,
PickthallAnd sun and moon are united,
Yusuf AliAnd the sun and moon are joined together,-
TransliterationYaqoolu al-insanu yawma-ithinayna almafar
Sahih InternationalMan will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"
PickthallOn that day man will cry: Whither to flee!
Yusuf AliThat Day will Man say: "Where is the refuge?"
TransliterationKalla la wazar
Sahih InternationalNo! There is no refuge.
PickthallAlas! No refuge!
Yusuf AliBy no means! No place of safety!
TransliterationIla rabbika yawma-ithinalmustaqar
Sahih InternationalTo your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.
PickthallUnto thy Lord is the recourse that day.
Yusuf AliBefore thy Lord (alone), that Day will be the place of rest.
TransliterationYunabbao al-insanu yawma-ithinbima qaddama waakhkhar
Sahih InternationalMan will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back.
PickthallOn that day man is told the tale of that which he hath sent before and left behind.
Yusuf AliThat Day will Man be told (all) that he put forward, and all that he put back.
TransliterationBali al-insanu AAala nafsihibaseera
Sahih InternationalRather, man, against himself, will be a witness,
PickthallOh, but man is a telling witness against himself,
Yusuf AliNay, man will be evidence against himself,
TransliterationWalaw alqa maAAatheerah
Sahih InternationalEven if he presents his excuses.
PickthallAlthough he tender his excuses.
Yusuf AliEven though he were to put up his excuses.
TransliterationLa tuharrik bihi lisanakalitaAAjala bih
Sahih InternationalMove not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur'an.
PickthallStir not thy tongue herewith to hasten it.
Yusuf AliMove not thy tongue concerning the (Qur'an) to make haste therewith.
TransliterationInna AAalayna jamAAahu waqur-anah
Sahih InternationalIndeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.
PickthallLo! upon Us (resteth) the putting together thereof and the reading thereof.
Yusuf AliIt is for Us to collect it and to promulgate it:
TransliterationFa-itha qara/nahu fattabiAAqur-anah
Sahih InternationalSo when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.
PickthallAnd when We read it, follow thou the reading;
Yusuf AliBut when We have promulgated it, follow thou its recital (as promulgated):
TransliterationThumma inna AAalayna bayanah
Sahih InternationalThen upon Us is its clarification [to you].
PickthallThen lo! upon Us (resteth) the explanation thereof.
Yusuf AliNay more, it is for Us to explain it (and make it clear):
TransliterationKalla bal tuhibboona alAAajila
Sahih InternationalNo! But you love the immediate
PickthallNay, but ye do love the fleeting Now
Yusuf AliNay, (ye men!) but ye love the fleeting life,
Sahih InternationalAnd leave the Hereafter.
PickthallAnd neglect the Hereafter.
Yusuf AliAnd leave alone the Hereafter.
TransliterationWujoohun yawma-ithin nadira
Sahih International[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,
PickthallThat day will faces be resplendent,
Yusuf AliSome faces, that Day, will beam (in brightness and beauty);-
TransliterationIla rabbiha nathira
Sahih InternationalLooking at their Lord.
PickthallLooking toward their Lord;
Yusuf AliLooking towards their Lord;
TransliterationWawujoohun yawma-ithin basira
Sahih InternationalAnd [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,
PickthallAnd that day will other faces be despondent,
Yusuf AliAnd some faces, that Day, will be sad and dismal,
TransliterationTathunnu an yufAAala bihafaqira
Sahih InternationalExpecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.
PickthallThou wilt know that some great disaster is about to fall on them.
Yusuf AliIn the thought that some back-breaking calamity was about to be inflicted on them;
TransliterationKalla itha balaghati attaraqiy
Sahih InternationalNo! When the soul has reached the collar bones
PickthallNay, but when the life cometh up to the throat
Yusuf AliYea, when (the soul) reaches to the collar-bone (in its exit),
TransliterationWaqeela man raq
Sahih InternationalAnd it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"
PickthallAnd men say: Where is the wizard (who can save him now)?
Yusuf AliAnd there will be a cry, "Who is a magician (to restore him)?"
TransliterationWathanna annahu alfiraq
Sahih InternationalAnd the dying one is certain that it is the [time of] separation
PickthallAnd he knoweth that it is the parting;
Yusuf AliAnd he will conclude that it was (the Time) of Parting;
TransliterationWaltaffati assaqu bilssaq
Sahih InternationalAnd the leg is wound about the leg,
PickthallAnd agony is heaped on agony;
Yusuf AliAnd one leg will be joined with another:
TransliterationIla rabbika yawma-ithin almasaq
Sahih InternationalTo your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.
PickthallUnto thy Lord that day will be the driving.
Yusuf AliThat Day the Drive will be (all) to thy Lord!
TransliterationFala saddaqa wala salla
Sahih InternationalAnd the disbeliever had not believed, nor had he prayed.
PickthallFor he neither trusted, nor prayed.
Yusuf AliSo he gave nothing in charity, nor did he pray!-
TransliterationWalakin kaththaba watawalla
Sahih InternationalBut [instead], he denied and turned away.
PickthallBut he denied and flouted.
Yusuf AliBut on the contrary, he rejected Truth and turned away!
TransliterationThumma thahaba ila ahlihiyatamatta
Sahih InternationalAnd then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].
PickthallThen went he to his folk with glee.
Yusuf AliThen did he stalk to his family in full conceit!
TransliterationAwla laka faawla
Sahih InternationalWoe to you, and woe!
PickthallNearer unto thee and nearer,
Yusuf AliWoe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!
TransliterationThumma awla laka faawla
Sahih InternationalThen woe to you, and woe!
PickthallAgain nearer unto thee and nearer (is the doom).
Yusuf AliAgain, Woe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!
TransliterationAyahsabu al-insanu an yutrakasuda
Sahih InternationalDoes man think that he will be left neglected?
PickthallThinketh man that he is to be left aimless?
Yusuf AliDoes man think that he will be left uncontrolled, (without purpose)?
TransliterationAlam yaku nutfatan min manayyin yumna
Sahih InternationalHad he not been a sperm from semen emitted?
PickthallWas he not a drop of fluid which gushed forth?
Yusuf AliWas he not a drop of sperm emitted (in lowly form)?
TransliterationThumma kana AAalaqatan fakhalaqafasawwa
Sahih InternationalThen he was a clinging clot, and [ Allah ] created [his form] and proportioned [him]
PickthallThen he became a clot; then (Allah) shaped and fashioned
Yusuf AliThen did he become a leech-like clot; then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion.
TransliterationFajaAAala minhu azzawjayni aththakarawal-ontha
Sahih InternationalAnd made of him two mates, the male and the female.
PickthallAnd made of him a pair, the male and female.
Yusuf AliAnd of him He made two sexes, male and female.
