Surah An-Naba' - سورة النبإ
(The Great News)
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Sahih InternationalAbout what are they asking one another?
PickthallWhereof do they question one another?
Yusuf AliConcerning what are they disputing?
TransliterationAAani annaba-i alAAatheem
Sahih InternationalAbout the great news -
Pickthall(It is) of the awful tidings,
Yusuf AliConcerning the Great News,
TransliterationAllathee hum feehi mukhtalifoon
Sahih InternationalThat over which they are in disagreement.
PickthallConcerning which they are in disagreement.
Yusuf AliAbout which they cannot agree.
Sahih InternationalNo! They are going to know.
PickthallNay, but they will come to know!
Yusuf AliVerily, they shall soon (come to) know!
TransliterationThumma kalla sayaAAlamoon
Sahih InternationalThen, no! They are going to know.
PickthallNay, again, but they will come to know!
Yusuf AliVerily, verily they shall soon (come to) know!
TransliterationAlam najAAali al-arda mihada
Sahih InternationalHave We not made the earth a resting place?
PickthallHave We not made the earth an expanse,
Yusuf AliHave We not made the earth as a wide expanse,
Sahih InternationalAnd the mountains as stakes?
PickthallAnd the high hills bulwarks?
Yusuf AliAnd the mountains as pegs?
Sahih InternationalAnd We created you in pairs
PickthallAnd We have created you in pairs,
Yusuf AliAnd (have We not) created you in pairs,
TransliterationWajaAAalna nawmakum subata
Sahih InternationalAnd made your sleep [a means for] rest
PickthallAnd have appointed your sleep for repose,
Yusuf AliAnd made your sleep for rest,
TransliterationWajaAAalna allayla libasa
Sahih InternationalAnd made the night as clothing
PickthallAnd have appointed the night as a cloak,
Yusuf AliAnd made the night as a covering,
Sahih InternationalAnd made the day for livelihood
PickthallAnd have appointed the day for livelihood.
Yusuf AliAnd made the day as a means of subsistence?
TransliterationWabanayna fawqakum sabAAan shidada
Sahih InternationalAnd constructed above you seven strong [heavens]
PickthallAnd We have built above you seven strong (heavens),
Yusuf AliAnd (have We not) built over you the seven firmaments,
TransliterationWajaAAalna sirajan wahhaja
Sahih InternationalAnd made [therein] a burning lamp
PickthallAnd have appointed a dazzling lamp,
Yusuf AliAnd placed (therein) a Light of Splendour?
TransliterationWaanzalna mina almuAAsiratimaan thajjaja
Sahih InternationalAnd sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water
PickthallAnd have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water,
Yusuf AliAnd do We not send down from the clouds water in abundance,
TransliterationLinukhrija bihi habban wanabata
Sahih InternationalThat We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation
PickthallThereby to produce grain and plant,
Yusuf AliThat We may produce therewith corn and vegetables,
Sahih InternationalAnd gardens of entwined growth.
PickthallAnd gardens of thick foliage.
Yusuf AliAnd gardens of luxurious growth?
TransliterationInna yawma alfasli kana meeqata
Sahih InternationalIndeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time -
PickthallLo! the Day of Decision is a fixed time,
Yusuf AliVerily the Day of Sorting out is a thing appointed,
TransliterationYawma yunfakhu fee assoorifata/toona afwaja
Sahih InternationalThe Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes
PickthallA day when the trumpet is blown and ye come in multitudes,
Yusuf AliThe Day that the Trumpet shall be sounded, and ye shall come forth in crowds;
TransliterationWafutihati assamao fakanatabwaba
Sahih InternationalAnd the heaven is opened and will become gateways
PickthallAnd the heaven is opened and becometh as gates,
Yusuf AliAnd the heavens shall be opened as if there were doors,
TransliterationWasuyyirati aljibalu fakanatsaraba
Sahih InternationalAnd the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.
PickthallAnd the hills are set in motion and become as a mirage.
Yusuf AliAnd the mountains shall vanish, as if they were a mirage.
TransliterationInna jahannama kanat mirsada
Sahih InternationalIndeed, Hell has been lying in wait
PickthallLo! hell lurketh in ambush,
Yusuf AliTruly Hell is as a place of ambush,
Sahih InternationalFor the transgressors, a place of return,
PickthallA home for the rebellious.
Yusuf AliFor the transgressors a place of destination:
TransliterationLabitheena feeha ahqaba
Sahih InternationalIn which they will remain for ages [unending].
PickthallThey will abide therein for ages.
Yusuf AliThey will dwell therein for ages.
TransliterationLa yathooqoona feehabardan wala sharaba
Sahih InternationalThey will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink
PickthallTherein taste they neither coolness nor (any) drink
Yusuf AliNothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink,
TransliterationIlla hameeman waghassaqa
Sahih InternationalExcept scalding water and [foul] purulence -
PickthallSave boiling water and a paralysing cold:
Yusuf AliSave a boiling fluid and a fluid, dark, murky, intensely cold,
Sahih InternationalAn appropriate recompense.
PickthallReward proportioned (to their evil deeds).
Yusuf AliA fitting recompense (for them).
TransliterationInnahum kanoo la yarjoona hisaba
Sahih InternationalIndeed, they were not expecting an account
PickthallFor lo! they looked not for a reckoning;
Yusuf AliFor that they used not to fear any account (for their deeds),
Sahih InternationalAnd denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.
PickthallThey called Our revelations false with strong denial.
Yusuf AliBut they (impudently) treated Our Signs as false.
TransliterationWakulla shay-in ahsaynahu kitaba
Sahih InternationalBut all things We have enumerated in writing.
PickthallEverything have We recorded in a Book.
Yusuf AliAnd all things have We preserved on record.
TransliterationFathooqoo falan nazeedakum illaAAathaba
Sahih International"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."
PickthallSo taste (of that which ye have earned). No increase do We give you save of torment.
Yusuf Ali"So taste ye (the fruits of your deeds); for no increase shall We grant you, except in Punishment."
TransliterationInna lilmuttaqeena mafaza
Sahih InternationalIndeed, for the righteous is attainment -
PickthallLo! for the duteous is achievement -
Yusuf AliVerily for the Righteous there will be a fulfilment of (the heart's) desires;
Sahih InternationalGardens and grapevines
PickthallGardens enclosed and vineyards,
Yusuf AliGardens enclosed, and grapevines;
Sahih InternationalAnd full-breasted [companions] of equal age
PickthallAnd voluptuous women of equal age;
Yusuf AliAnd voluptuous women of equal age;
Sahih InternationalAnd a full cup.
PickthallAnd a full cup.
Yusuf AliAnd a cup full (to the brim).
TransliterationLa yasmaAAoona feeha laghwanwala kiththaba
Sahih InternationalNo ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -
PickthallThere hear they never vain discourse, nor lying -
Yusuf AliNo vanity shall they hear therein, nor Untruth:-
TransliterationJazaan min rabbika AAataan hisaba
Sahih International[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,
PickthallRequital from thy Lord - a gift in payment -
Yusuf AliRecompense from thy Lord, a gift, (amply) sufficient,
TransliterationRabbi assamawati wal-ardiwama baynahuma arrahmani layamlikoona minhu khitaba
Sahih International[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.
PickthallLord of the heavens and the earth, and (all) that is between them, the Beneficent; with Whom none can converse.
Yusuf Ali(From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between, (Allah) Most Gracious: None shall have power to argue with Him.
TransliterationYawma yaqoomu arroohu walmala-ikatusaffan la yatakallamoona illa man athinalahu arrahmanu waqala sawaba
Sahih InternationalThe Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.
PickthallOn the day when the angels and the Spirit stand arrayed, they speak not, saving him whom the Beneficent alloweth and who speaketh right.
Yusuf AliThe Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand forth in ranks, none shall speak except any who is permitted by (Allah) Most Gracious, and He will say what is right.
TransliterationThalika alyawmu alhaqqu famanshaa ittakhatha ila rabbihi maaba
Sahih InternationalThat is the True Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.
PickthallThat is the True Day. So whoso will should seek recourse unto his Lord.
Yusuf AliThat Day will be the sure Reality: Therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) return to his Lord!
TransliterationInna antharnakum AAathabanqareeban yawma yanthuru almaro ma qaddamatyadahu wayaqoolu alkafiru ya laytanee kuntuturaba
Sahih InternationalIndeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"
PickthallLo! We warn you of a doom at hand, a day whereon a man will look on that which his own hands have sent before, and the disbeliever will cry: "Would that I were dust!"
Yusuf AliVerily, We have warned you of a Penalty near, the Day when man will see (the deeds) which his hands have sent forth, and the Unbeliever will say, "Woe unto me! Would that I were (metre) dust!"
