Surah `Abasa - سورة عبس
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Sahih InternationalThe Prophet frowned and turned away
PickthallHe frowned and turned away
Yusuf Ali(The Prophet) frowned and turned away,
TransliterationAn jaahu al-aAAma
Sahih InternationalBecause there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].
PickthallBecause the blind man came unto him.
Yusuf AliBecause there came to him the blind man (interrupting).
TransliterationWama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka
Sahih InternationalBut what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified
PickthallWhat could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace)
Yusuf AliBut what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?-
TransliterationAw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu aththikra
Sahih InternationalOr be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
PickthallOr take heed and so the reminder might avail him?
Yusuf AliOr that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him?
TransliterationAmma mani istaghna
Sahih InternationalAs for he who thinks himself without need,
PickthallAs for him who thinketh himself independent,
Yusuf AliAs to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient,
TransliterationFaanta lahu tasadda
Sahih InternationalTo him you give attention.
PickthallUnto him thou payest regard.
Yusuf AliTo him dost thou attend;
TransliterationWama AAalayka alla yazzakka
Sahih InternationalAnd not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.
PickthallYet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace).
Yusuf AliThough it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding).
TransliterationWaamma man jaaka yasAAa
Sahih InternationalBut as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
PickthallBut as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose
Yusuf AliBut as to him who came to thee striving earnestly,
Sahih InternationalWhile he fears [ Allah ],
PickthallAnd hath fear,
Yusuf AliAnd with fear (in his heart),
TransliterationFaanta AAanhu talahha
Sahih InternationalFrom him you are distracted.
PickthallFrom him thou art distracted.
Yusuf AliOf him wast thou unmindful.
TransliterationKalla innaha tathkira
Sahih InternationalNo! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;
PickthallNay, but verily it is an Admonishment,
Yusuf AliBy no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction:
TransliterationFaman shaa thakarah
Sahih InternationalSo whoever wills may remember it.
PickthallSo let whosoever will pay heed to it,
Yusuf AliTherefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance.
TransliterationFee suhufin mukarrama
Sahih International[It is recorded] in honored sheets,
PickthallOn honoured leaves
Yusuf Ali(It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour,
Sahih InternationalExalted and purified,
Yusuf AliExalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy,
Sahih International[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,
Pickthall(Set down) by scribes
Yusuf Ali(Written) by the hands of scribes-
Sahih InternationalNoble and dutiful.
PickthallNoble and righteous.
Yusuf AliHonourable and Pious and Just.
TransliterationQutila al-insanu ma akfarah
Sahih InternationalCursed is man; how disbelieving is he.
PickthallMan is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful!
Yusuf AliWoe to man! What hath made him reject Allah;
TransliterationMin ayyi shay-in khalaqah
Sahih InternationalFrom what substance did He create him?
PickthallFrom what thing doth He create him?
Yusuf AliFrom what stuff hath He created him?
TransliterationMin nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarah
Sahih InternationalFrom a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;
PickthallFrom a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him,
Yusuf AliFrom a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions;
TransliterationThumma assabeela yassarah
Sahih InternationalThen He eased the way for him;
PickthallThen maketh the way easy for him,
Yusuf AliThen doth He make His path smooth for him;
TransliterationThumma amatahu faaqbarah
Sahih InternationalThen He causes his death and provides a grave for him.
PickthallThen causeth him to die, and burieth him;
Yusuf AliThen He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave;
TransliterationThumma itha shaa ansharah
Sahih InternationalThen when He wills, He will resurrect him.
PickthallThen, when He will, He bringeth him again to life.
Yusuf AliThen, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again).
TransliterationKalla lamma yaqdi maamarah
Sahih InternationalNo! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
PickthallNay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him.
Yusuf AliBy no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him.
TransliterationFalyanthuri al-insanuila taAAamih
Sahih InternationalThen let mankind look at his food -
PickthallLet man consider his food:
Yusuf AliThen let man look at his food, (and how We provide it):
TransliterationAnna sababna almaasabba
Sahih InternationalHow We poured down water in torrents,
PickthallHow We pour water in showers
Yusuf AliFor that We pour forth water in abundance,
TransliterationThumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqa
Sahih InternationalThen We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
PickthallThen split the earth in clefts
Yusuf AliAnd We split the earth in fragments,
TransliterationFaanbatna feeha habba
Sahih InternationalAnd caused to grow within it grain
PickthallAnd cause the grain to grow therein
Yusuf AliAnd produce therein corn,
Sahih InternationalAnd grapes and herbage
PickthallAnd grapes and green fodder
Yusuf AliAnd Grapes and nutritious plants,
Sahih InternationalAnd olive and palm trees
PickthallAnd olive-trees and palm-trees
Yusuf AliAnd Olives and Dates,
Sahih InternationalAnd gardens of dense shrubbery
PickthallAnd garden-closes of thick foliage
Yusuf AliAnd enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees,
Sahih InternationalAnd fruit and grass -
PickthallAnd fruits and grasses:
Yusuf AliAnd fruits and fodder,-
TransliterationMataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum
Sahih International[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.
PickthallProvision for you and your cattle.
Yusuf AliFor use and convenience to you and your cattle.
TransliterationFa-itha jaati assakhkha
Sahih InternationalBut when there comes the Deafening Blast
PickthallBut when the Shout cometh
Yusuf AliAt length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,-
TransliterationYawma yafirru almaro min akheeh
Sahih InternationalOn the Day a man will flee from his brother
PickthallOn the day when a man fleeth from his brother
Yusuf AliThat Day shall a man flee from his own brother,
Sahih InternationalAnd his mother and his father
PickthallAnd his mother and his father
Yusuf AliAnd from his mother and his father,
Sahih InternationalAnd his wife and his children,
PickthallAnd his wife and his children,
Yusuf AliAnd from his wife and his children.
TransliterationLikulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithinsha/nun yughneeh
Sahih InternationalFor every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
PickthallEvery man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others).
Yusuf AliEach one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others.
TransliterationWujoohun yawma-ithin musfira
Sahih International[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -
PickthallOn that day faces will be bright as dawn,
Yusuf AliSome faces that Day will be beaming,
Sahih InternationalLaughing, rejoicing at good news.
PickthallLaughing, rejoicing at good news;
Yusuf AliLaughing, rejoicing.
TransliterationWawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayhaghabara
Sahih InternationalAnd [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.
PickthallAnd other faces, on that day, with dust upon them,
Yusuf AliAnd other faces that Day will be dust-stained,
Sahih InternationalBlackness will cover them.
PickthallVeiled in darkness,
Yusuf AliBlackness will cover them:
