Surah Al-Fajr - سورة الفجر
(The Break of the Day/The Dawn)
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Sahih InternationalBy the dawn
PickthallBy the Dawn
Yusuf AliBy the break of Day
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] ten nights
PickthallAnd ten nights,
Yusuf AliBy the Nights twice five;
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] the even [number] and the odd
PickthallAnd the Even and the Odd,
Yusuf AliBy the even and odd (contrasted);
TransliterationWallayli itha yasr
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] the night when it passes,
PickthallAnd the night when it departeth,
Yusuf AliAnd by the Night when it passeth away;-
TransliterationHal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijr
Sahih InternationalIs there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?
PickthallThere surely is an oath for thinking man.
Yusuf AliIs there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand?
TransliterationAlam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAad
Sahih InternationalHave you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad -
PickthallDost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad,
Yusuf AliSeest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),-
TransliterationIrama thati alAAimad
Sahih International[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,
PickthallWith many-columned Iram,
Yusuf AliOf the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars,
TransliterationAllatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albilad
Sahih InternationalThe likes of whom had never been created in the land?
PickthallThe like of which was not created in the lands;
Yusuf AliThe like of which were not produced in (all) the land?
TransliterationWathamooda allatheena jaboo assakhrabilwad
Sahih InternationalAnd [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
PickthallAnd with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley;
Yusuf AliAnd with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?-
TransliterationWafirAAawna thee al-awtad
Sahih InternationalAnd [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? -
PickthallAnd with Pharaoh, firm of might,
Yusuf AliAnd with Pharaoh, lord of stakes?
TransliterationAllatheena taghaw fee albilad
Sahih International[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
PickthallWho (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands,
Yusuf Ali(All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands,
TransliterationFaaktharoo feeha alfasad
Sahih InternationalAnd increased therein the corruption.
PickthallAnd multiplied iniquity therein?
Yusuf AliAnd heaped therein mischief (on mischief).
TransliterationFasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawtaAAathab
Sahih InternationalSo your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
PickthallTherefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment.
Yusuf AliTherefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements:
TransliterationInna rabbaka labilmirsad
Sahih InternationalIndeed, your Lord is in observation.
PickthallLo! thy Lord is ever watchful.
Yusuf AliFor thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower.
TransliterationFaamma al-insanu itha maibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbeeakraman
Sahih InternationalAnd as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."
PickthallAs for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me.
Yusuf AliNow, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me."
TransliterationWaamma itha ma ibtalahufaqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanan
Sahih InternationalBut when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
PickthallBut whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me.
Yusuf AliBut when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!"
TransliterationKalla bal la tukrimoonaalyateem
Sahih InternationalNo! But you do not honor the orphan
PickthallNay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan
Yusuf AliNay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans!
TransliterationWala tahaddoona AAala taAAamialmiskeen
Sahih InternationalAnd you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
PickthallAnd urge not on the feeding of the poor.
Yusuf AliNor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!-
TransliterationWata/kuloona atturatha aklanlamma
Sahih InternationalAnd you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,
PickthallAnd ye devour heritages with devouring greed.
Yusuf AliAnd ye devour inheritance - all with greed,
TransliterationWatuhibboona almala hubbanjamma
Sahih InternationalAnd you love wealth with immense love.
PickthallAnd love wealth with abounding love.
Yusuf AliAnd ye love wealth with inordinate love!
TransliterationKalla itha dukkati al-ardudakkan dakka
Sahih InternationalNo! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed -
PickthallNay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding,
Yusuf AliNay! When the earth is pounded to powder,
TransliterationWajaa rabbuka walmalaku saffansaffa
Sahih InternationalAnd your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,
PickthallAnd thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank,
Yusuf AliAnd thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank,
TransliterationWajee-a yawma-ithin bijahannamayawma-ithin yatathakkaru al-insanu waannalahu aththikra
Sahih InternationalAnd brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?
PickthallAnd hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)?
Yusuf AliAnd Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him?
TransliterationYaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee
Sahih InternationalHe will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."
PickthallHe will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life!
Yusuf AliHe will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!"
TransliterationFayawma-ithin la yuAAaththibuAAathabahu ahad
Sahih InternationalSo on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
PickthallNone punisheth as He will punish on that day!
Yusuf AliFor, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict,
TransliterationWala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahad
Sahih InternationalAnd none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
PickthallNone bindeth as He then will bind.
Yusuf AliAnd His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind.
TransliterationYa ayyatuha annafsualmutma-inna
Sahih International[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
PickthallBut ah! thou soul at peace!
Yusuf Ali(To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction!
TransliterationIrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatanmardiyya
Sahih InternationalReturn to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
PickthallReturn unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure!
Yusuf Ali"Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him!
TransliterationFadkhulee fee AAibadee
Sahih InternationalAnd enter among My [righteous] servants
PickthallEnter thou among My bondmen!
Yusuf Ali"Enter thou, then, among My devotees!
