Surah Al-Balad - سورة البلد
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
TransliterationLa oqsimu bihatha albalad
Sahih InternationalI swear by this city, Makkah -
PickthallNay, I swear by this city -
Yusuf AliI do call to witness this City;-
TransliterationWaanta hillun bihatha albalad
Sahih InternationalAnd you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -
PickthallAnd thou art an indweller of this city -
Yusuf AliAnd thou art a freeman of this City;-
TransliterationWawalidin wama walad
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
PickthallAnd the begetter and that which he begat,
Yusuf AliAnd (the mystic ties of) parent and child;-
TransliterationLaqad khalaqna al-insana feekabad
Sahih InternationalWe have certainly created man into hardship.
PickthallWe verily have created man in an atmosphere:
Yusuf AliVerily We have created man into toil and struggle.
TransliterationAyahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahad
Sahih InternationalDoes he think that never will anyone overcome him?
PickthallThinketh he that none hath power over him?
Yusuf AliThinketh he, that none hath power over him?
TransliterationYaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubada
Sahih InternationalHe says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
PickthallAnd he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:
Yusuf AliHe may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!
TransliterationAyahsabu an lam yarahu ahad
Sahih InternationalDoes he think that no one has seen him?
PickthallThinketh he that none beholdeth him?
Yusuf AliThinketh he that none beholdeth him?
TransliterationAlam najAAal lahu AAaynayn
Sahih InternationalHave We not made for him two eyes?
PickthallDid We not assign unto him two eyes
Yusuf AliHave We not made for him a pair of eyes?-
Sahih InternationalAnd a tongue and two lips?
PickthallAnd a tongue and two lips,
Yusuf AliAnd a tongue, and a pair of lips?-
Sahih InternationalAnd have shown him the two ways?
PickthallAnd guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?
Yusuf AliAnd shown him the two highways?
TransliterationFala iqtahama alAAaqaba
Sahih InternationalBut he has not broken through the difficult pass.
PickthallBut he hath not attempted the Ascent -
Yusuf AliBut he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.
TransliterationWama adraka maalAAaqaba
Sahih InternationalAnd what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
PickthallAh, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! -
Yusuf AliAnd what will explain to thee the path that is steep?-
Sahih InternationalIt is the freeing of a slave
Pickthall(It is) to free a slave,
Yusuf Ali(It is:) freeing the bondman;
TransliterationAw itAAamun fee yawmin theemasghaba
Sahih InternationalOr feeding on a day of severe hunger
PickthallAnd to feed in the day of hunger.
Yusuf AliOr the giving of food in a day of privation
TransliterationYateeman tha maqraba
Sahih InternationalAn orphan of near relationship
PickthallAn orphan near of kin,
Yusuf AliTo the orphan with claims of relationship,
TransliterationAw miskeenan tha matraba
Sahih InternationalOr a needy person in misery
PickthallOr some poor wretch in misery,
Yusuf AliOr to the indigent (down) in the dust.
TransliterationThumma kana mina allatheena amanoowatawasaw bissabri watawasaw bilmarhama
Sahih InternationalAnd then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
PickthallAnd to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity.
Yusuf AliThen will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.
Sahih InternationalThose are the companions of the right.
PickthallTheir place will be on the right hand.
Yusuf AliSuch are the Companions of the Right Hand.
TransliterationWallatheena kafaroo bi-ayatinahum as-habu almash-ama
Sahih InternationalBut they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.
PickthallBut those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand.
Yusuf AliBut those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.
