Surah Ash-Shams - سورة الشمس
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Sahih InternationalBy the sun and its brightness
PickthallBy the sun and his brightness,
Yusuf AliBy the Sun and his (glorious) splendour;
TransliterationWalqamari itha talaha
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] the moon when it follows it
PickthallAnd the moon when she followeth him,
Yusuf AliBy the Moon as she follows him;
TransliterationWannahari itha jallaha
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] the day when it displays it
PickthallAnd the day when it revealeth him,
Yusuf AliBy the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory;
TransliterationWallayli itha yaghshaha
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] the night when it covers it
PickthallAnd the night when it enshroudeth him,
Yusuf AliBy the Night as it conceals it;
TransliterationWassama-i wama banaha
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] the sky and He who constructed it
PickthallAnd the heaven and Him Who built it,
Yusuf AliBy the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure;
TransliterationWal-ardi wama tahaha
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] the earth and He who spread it
PickthallAnd the earth and Him Who spread it,
Yusuf AliBy the Earth and its (wide) expanse:
TransliterationWanafsin wama sawwaha
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] the soul and He who proportioned it
PickthallAnd a soul and Him Who perfected it
Yusuf AliBy the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it;
TransliterationFaalhamaha fujooraha wataqwaha
Sahih InternationalAnd inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
PickthallAnd inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it.
Yusuf AliAnd its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;-
TransliterationQad aflaha man zakkaha
Sahih InternationalHe has succeeded who purifies it,
PickthallHe is indeed successful who causeth it to grow,
Yusuf AliTruly he succeeds that purifies it,
TransliterationWaqad khaba man dassaha
Sahih InternationalAnd he has failed who instills it [with corruption].
PickthallAnd he is indeed a failure who stunteth it.
Yusuf AliAnd he fails that corrupts it!
TransliterationKaththabat thamoodu bitaghwaha
Sahih InternationalThamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,
Pickthall(The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride,
Yusuf AliThe Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing,
TransliterationIthi inbaAAatha ashqaha
Sahih InternationalWhen the most wretched of them was sent forth.
PickthallWhen the basest of them broke forth
Yusuf AliBehold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety).
TransliterationFaqala lahum rasoolu Allahi naqataAllahi wasuqyaha
Sahih InternationalAnd the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink."
PickthallAnd the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink!
Yusuf AliBut the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!"
TransliterationFakaththaboohu faAAaqaroohafadamdama AAalayhim rabbuhum bithanbihim fasawwaha
Sahih InternationalBut they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].
PickthallBut they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings).
Yusuf AliThen they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)!
