Surah Al-Layl - سورة الليل
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
TransliterationWallayli itha yaghsha
Sahih InternationalBy the night when it covers
PickthallBy the night enshrouding
Yusuf AliBy the Night as it conceals (the light);
TransliterationWannahari itha tajalla
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] the day when it appears
PickthallAnd the day resplendent
Yusuf AliBy the Day as it appears in glory;
TransliterationWama khalaqa aththakarawal-ontha
Sahih InternationalAnd [by] He who created the male and female,
PickthallAnd Him Who hath created male and female,
Yusuf AliBy (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;-
TransliterationInna saAAyakum lashatta
Sahih InternationalIndeed, your efforts are diverse.
PickthallLo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends).
Yusuf AliVerily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse.
TransliterationFaamma man aAAta wattaqa
Sahih InternationalAs for he who gives and fears Allah
PickthallAs for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah)
Yusuf AliSo he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah),
Sahih InternationalAnd believes in the best [reward],
PickthallAnd believeth in goodness;
Yusuf AliAnd (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,-
Sahih InternationalWe will ease him toward ease.
PickthallSurely We will ease his way unto the state of ease.
Yusuf AliWe will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss.
TransliterationWaamma man bakhila wastaghna
Sahih InternationalBut as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need
PickthallBut as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent,
Yusuf AliBut he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient,
Sahih InternationalAnd denies the best [reward],
PickthallAnd disbelieveth in goodness;
Yusuf AliAnd gives the lie to the best,-
Sahih InternationalWe will ease him toward difficulty.
PickthallSurely We will ease his way unto adversity.
Yusuf AliWe will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery;
TransliterationWama yughnee AAanhu maluhu ithataradda
Sahih InternationalAnd what will his wealth avail him when he falls?
PickthallHis riches will not save him when he perisheth.
Yusuf AliNor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit).
TransliterationInna AAalayna lalhuda
Sahih InternationalIndeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.
PickthallLo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance
Yusuf AliVerily We take upon Ourselves to guide,
TransliterationWa-inna lana lal-akhirata wal-oola
Sahih InternationalAnd indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
PickthallAnd lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former.
Yusuf AliAnd verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning.
TransliterationFaanthartukum naran talaththa
Sahih InternationalSo I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing.
PickthallTherefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire
Yusuf AliTherefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely;
TransliterationLa yaslaha illaal-ashqa
Sahih InternationalNone will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one.
PickthallWhich only the most wretched must endure,
Yusuf AliNone shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones
TransliterationAllathee kaththaba watawalla
Sahih InternationalWho had denied and turned away.
PickthallHe who denieth and turneth away.
Yusuf AliWho give the lie to Truth and turn their backs.
Sahih InternationalBut the righteous one will avoid it -
PickthallFar removed from it will be the righteous
Yusuf AliBut those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,-
TransliterationAllathee yu/tee malahuyatazakka
Sahih International[He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself
PickthallWho giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness).
Yusuf AliThose who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification,
TransliterationWama li-ahadin AAindahu minniAAmatin tujza
Sahih InternationalAnd not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded
PickthallAnd none hath with him any favour for reward,
Yusuf AliAnd have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,
TransliterationIlla ibtighaa wajhi rabbihial-aAAla
Sahih InternationalBut only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High.
PickthallExcept as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High.
Yusuf AliBut only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High;
