Surah Al-`Alaq - سورة العلق
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
TransliterationIqra/ bi-ismi rabbika allathee khalaq
Sahih InternationalRecite in the name of your Lord who created -
PickthallRead: In the name of thy Lord Who createth,
Yusuf AliProclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-
TransliterationKhalaqa al-insana min AAalaq
Sahih InternationalCreated man from a clinging substance.
PickthallCreateth man from a clot.
Yusuf AliCreated man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:
TransliterationIqra/ warabbuka al-akram
Sahih InternationalRecite, and your Lord is the most Generous -
PickthallRead: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous,
Yusuf AliProclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-
TransliterationAllathee AAallama bilqalam
Sahih InternationalWho taught by the pen -
PickthallWho teacheth by the pen,
Yusuf AliHe Who taught (the use of) the pen,-
TransliterationAAallama al-insana ma lamyaAAlam
Sahih InternationalTaught man that which he knew not.
PickthallTeacheth man that which he knew not.
Yusuf AliTaught man that which he knew not.
TransliterationKalla inna al-insana layatgha
Sahih InternationalNo! [But] indeed, man transgresses
PickthallNay, but verily man is rebellious
Yusuf AliNay, but man doth transgress all bounds,
TransliterationAn raahu istaghna
Sahih InternationalBecause he sees himself self-sufficient.
PickthallThat he thinketh himself independent!
Yusuf AliIn that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.
TransliterationInna ila rabbika arrujAAa
Sahih InternationalIndeed, to your Lord is the return.
PickthallLo! unto thy Lord is the return.
Yusuf AliVerily, to thy Lord is the return (of all).
TransliterationAraayta allathee yanha
Sahih InternationalHave you seen the one who forbids
PickthallHast thou seen him who dissuadeth
Yusuf AliSeest thou one who forbids-
TransliterationAAabdan itha salla
Sahih InternationalA servant when he prays?
PickthallA slave when he prayeth?
Yusuf AliA votary when he (turns) to pray?
TransliterationAraayta in kana AAala alhuda
Sahih InternationalHave you seen if he is upon guidance
PickthallHast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah)
Yusuf AliSeest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?-
TransliterationAw amara bittaqwa
Sahih InternationalOr enjoins righteousness?
PickthallOr enjoineth piety?
Yusuf AliOr enjoins Righteousness?
TransliterationAraayta in kaththaba watawalla
Sahih InternationalHave you seen if he denies and turns away -
PickthallHast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward?
Yusuf AliSeest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?
TransliterationAlam yaAAlam bi-anna Allaha yara
Sahih InternationalDoes he not know that Allah sees?
PickthallIs he then unaware that Allah seeth?
Yusuf AliKnoweth he not that Allah doth see?
TransliterationKalla la-in lam yantahi lanasfaAAanbinnasiya
Sahih InternationalNo! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock -
PickthallNay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock -
Yusuf AliLet him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,-
TransliterationNasiyatin kathibatin khati-a
Sahih InternationalA lying, sinning forelock.
PickthallThe lying, sinful forelock -
Yusuf AliA lying, sinful forelock!
Sahih InternationalThen let him call his associates;
PickthallThen let him call upon his henchmen!
Yusuf AliThen, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):
Sahih InternationalWe will call the angels of Hell.
PickthallWe will call the guards of hell.
Yusuf AliWe will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!
TransliterationKalla la tutiAAhu wasjudwaqtarib
Sahih InternationalNo! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah ].
PickthallNay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).
Yusuf AliDay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)!
