Chapter 80
Surah `Abasa - سورة عبس
(He Frowned)
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Transliteration
AAabasa watawallaSahih International
The Prophet frowned and turned awayPickthall
He frowned and turned away Yusuf Ali
(The Prophet) frowned and turned away, Transliteration
An jaahu al-aAAmaSahih International
Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].Pickthall
Because the blind man came unto him. Yusuf Ali
Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). Transliteration
Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakkaSahih International
But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purifiedPickthall
What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) Yusuf Ali
But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?-Transliteration
Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu aththikraSahih International
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?Pickthall
Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? Yusuf Ali
Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him?Transliteration
Amma mani istaghnaSahih International
As for he who thinks himself without need,Pickthall
As for him who thinketh himself independent, Yusuf Ali
As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, Transliteration
Faanta lahu tasaddaSahih International
To him you give attention.Pickthall
Unto him thou payest regard. Yusuf Ali
To him dost thou attend; Transliteration
Wama AAalayka alla yazzakkaSahih International
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.Pickthall
Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). Yusuf Ali
Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding).Transliteration
Waamma man jaaka yasAAaSahih International
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]Pickthall
But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose Yusuf Ali
But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, Transliteration
Wahuwa yakhshaSahih International
While he fears [ Allah ],Pickthall
And hath fear, Yusuf Ali
And with fear (in his heart), Transliteration
Faanta AAanhu talahhaSahih International
From him you are distracted.Pickthall
From him thou art distracted. Yusuf Ali
Of him wast thou unmindful. Transliteration
Kalla innaha tathkiraSahih International
No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;Pickthall
Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, Yusuf Ali
By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction:Transliteration
Faman shaa thakarahSahih International
So whoever wills may remember it.Pickthall
So let whosoever will pay heed to it, Yusuf Ali
Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. Transliteration
Fee suhufin mukarramaSahih International
[It is recorded] in honored sheets,Pickthall
On honoured leaves Yusuf Ali
(It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, Transliteration
MarfooAAatin mutahharaSahih International
Exalted and purified,Pickthall
Exalted, purified, Yusuf Ali
Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, Transliteration
Bi-aydee safaraSahih International
[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,Pickthall
(Set down) by scribes Yusuf Ali
(Written) by the hands of scribes- Transliteration
Kiramin bararaSahih International
Noble and dutiful.Pickthall
Noble and righteous. Yusuf Ali
Honourable and Pious and Just. Transliteration
Qutila al-insanu ma akfarahSahih International
Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.Pickthall
Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! Yusuf Ali
Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; Transliteration
Min ayyi shay-in khalaqahSahih International
From what substance did He create him?Pickthall
From what thing doth He create him? Yusuf Ali
From what stuff hath He created him? Transliteration
Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahSahih International
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;Pickthall
From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, Yusuf Ali
From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions;Transliteration
Thumma assabeela yassarahSahih International
Then He eased the way for him;Pickthall
Then maketh the way easy for him, Yusuf Ali
Then doth He make His path smooth for him; Transliteration
Thumma amatahu faaqbarahSahih International
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.Pickthall
Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; Yusuf Ali
Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; Transliteration
Thumma itha shaa ansharahSahih International
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.Pickthall
Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. Yusuf Ali
Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). Transliteration
Kalla lamma yaqdi maamarahSahih International
No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.Pickthall
Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. Yusuf Ali
By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. Transliteration
Falyanthuri al-insanuila taAAamihSahih International
Then let mankind look at his food -Pickthall
Let man consider his food: Yusuf Ali
Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it): Transliteration
Anna sababna almaasabbaSahih International
How We poured down water in torrents,Pickthall
How We pour water in showers Yusuf Ali
For that We pour forth water in abundance, Transliteration
Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqaSahih International
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],Pickthall
Then split the earth in clefts Yusuf Ali
And We split the earth in fragments, Transliteration
Faanbatna feeha habbaSahih International
And caused to grow within it grainPickthall
And cause the grain to grow therein Yusuf Ali
And produce therein corn, Transliteration
WaAAinaban waqadbaSahih International
And grapes and herbagePickthall
And grapes and green fodder Yusuf Ali
And Grapes and nutritious plants, Transliteration
Wazaytoonan wanakhlaSahih International
And olive and palm treesPickthall
And olive-trees and palm-trees Yusuf Ali
And Olives and Dates, Transliteration
Wahada-iqa ghulbaSahih International
And gardens of dense shrubberyPickthall
And garden-closes of thick foliage Yusuf Ali
And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, Transliteration
Wafakihatan waabbaSahih International
And fruit and grass -Pickthall
And fruits and grasses: Yusuf Ali
And fruits and fodder,- Transliteration
MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikumSahih International
[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.Pickthall
Provision for you and your cattle. Yusuf Ali
For use and convenience to you and your cattle. Transliteration
Fa-itha jaati assakhkhaSahih International
But when there comes the Deafening BlastPickthall
But when the Shout cometh Yusuf Ali
At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- Transliteration
Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehSahih International
On the Day a man will flee from his brotherPickthall
On the day when a man fleeth from his brother Yusuf Ali
That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, Transliteration
Waommihi waabeehSahih International
And his mother and his fatherPickthall
And his mother and his father Yusuf Ali
And from his mother and his father, Transliteration
Wasahibatihi wabaneehSahih International
And his wife and his children,Pickthall
And his wife and his children, Yusuf Ali
And from his wife and his children. Transliteration
Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithinsha/nun yughneehSahih International
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.Pickthall
Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others).Yusuf Ali
Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others.Transliteration
Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfiraSahih International
[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -Pickthall
On that day faces will be bright as dawn, Yusuf Ali
Some faces that Day will be beaming, Transliteration
Dahikatun mustabshiraSahih International
Laughing, rejoicing at good news.Pickthall
Laughing, rejoicing at good news; Yusuf Ali
Laughing, rejoicing. Transliteration
Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayhaghabaraSahih International
And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.Pickthall
And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, Yusuf Ali
And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, Transliteration
Tarhaquha qataraSahih International
Blackness will cover them.Pickthall
Veiled in darkness, Yusuf Ali
